Ancillary Services

Below is a list of Ancillary Services offered at St Mary MacKillop College, providing support and opportunities for students to broaden, enhance or improve their learning outcomes:

CITIZENSHIP AND COMMUNITY

  • Christian Service-Learning Programs
    The Christian Service-Learning programs in Years 7 and 8 provide a focus on home-based activities. Year 9 students complete their service by assisting around the school. Across Years 10, 11 and 12, students will complete at least 50 hours of service in the wider community.
  • Careers Planning and VET Team
    The College has a Careers Planning and Vocational Education & Training (VET) Team, which provides students and parents with relevant in-depth information to assist them in making choices regarding employment, training and further study.
  • Wellbeing Services Team
    Our Wellbeing Services team, consisting of a Social Worker and two Educational Psychologists, work together proactively to support students through individual and group interventions. They also liaise closely with the Heads of Year in the secondary school and teachers in the primary school to develop whole-school programs that equip our students with the necessary skills and knowledge to cope with life’s challenges.
  • Aboriginal Liaison
    An Aboriginal Liaison Officer (ALO) is based at the College and plays a crucial role in supporting Aboriginal students and fostering cultural understanding within the school community. The ALO acts as a bridge between the Aboriginal community and the school, aiming to improve educational outcomes for Aboriginal students, and promotes cultural awareness and sensitivity within the school and wider community.
    Bursaries are also available to cover the cost of tuition fees to assist Aboriginal students who might be denied a Catholic education because of financial circumstances.
  • Activity and Camp Week
    Opportunities for further skills development and community building beyond the curriculum include our Year 7/8 Activity Week, Year 9 Adventure Camp, Year 10 Work Experience, and a Year 11 trip to Perth exploring further study and career paths.
  • ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT

  • Learning Support Team
    Our Learning Support Teams in both primary and secondary work closely with students, families and teachers to develop and deliver individual education plans for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.
  • Academic Extension Programs
    A well-established Accelerated Reader program matches the careful and critical reading of literature in the classroom to each primary child’s reading levels and goals.
    The Curiosity Academy aims to provide challenging and motivating extra-curricular learning opportunities and activities for students in Year 5 and 6 who demonstrate exceptional academic or collaborative capacity and creative thinking.
    In Middle School, academic extension classes aim to challenge and enrich students who demonstrate a high capacity and potential in each learning area. The streaming process begins for Mathematics from Year 7, Humanities and Science from Year 9 and Religious Education from Year 10.
  • After School Academic Support
    The College offers homework classes after school hours on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday for secondary students of all abilities. This includes tutoring from subject teachers in Mathematics, English
    and Science (Years 7-12).
  • Academic Opportunities and Competitions
    The College offers a range of academic activities that broaden and enhance the day-to-day curriculum, developing student innovation and teamwork. Opportunities include Young Writers’ Program and Book Club, as well as Solar Car Challenge, Tournament of Minds, Philosothon, and Australian Competitions in Geography, History, Science and Mathematics.
  • Manufacturing Industry Studies (MIS)
    For Year 11 and Year 12 students wishing to obtain an apprenticeship in the Building Industry, this program enables the completion of a Certificate II in Construction, Engineering and Furniture Making. Students gain practical experience onsite and complete their first aid certificates and White Card.
  • SPORTS AND CULTURE

  • Full-scale Musical Theatre Production
    The College presents a full-scale musical theatre production every two years, accepting auditions from Year 4 to Year 12. Acting, singing, dancing, as well as sound, lighting and other technical and backstage roles are available for interested students.
  • Visual Art Design & Technology Exhibitions
    The College presents an annual Art Design & Technology Exhibition for the public, which showcases our students’ visual arts from Year 1 to Year 12, as well as media, photography, metal and woodwork skills. Student artwork from MacKillop is also regularly featured in the annual Catholic Arts Angelico Exhibition in Perth.

  • Instrumental Music and Performance Programs
    The College offers students the opportunity to learn an instrument through our Instrumental Music Program. Music lessons are available for complete beginners through to more advanced students at the College in guitar and bass guitar, drums, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet, trombone, singing and piano.
    A range of College ensembles and events give all instrumental students a chance to perform for school and community audiences. Our music and technical students also regularly feature at local events and the annual Spirit of the Arts Festival in Perth.

  • Sporting Opportunities and Competitions
    Students in Years 4-6 represent the College annually in Southwest Primary Schools Association (SWPSA) Carnivals for swimming, athletics and cross-country. All Year 6 students participate in a Winter Carnival each year for AFL, soccer, netball and hockey, as well as a local cricket carnival. Year 6 College teams in basketball also compete in annual regional competitions, with opportunities to progress to state championships in Perth.
    Secondary students participate in ACC statewide competitions in swimming, cross-country, athletics, hockey and AFL, as well as regional and statewide competitions in basketball, netball, equestrian and surfing.
