Netball: boys challenge metro schools in Freo

Netball: boys challenge metro schools in Freo

On Friday 22 July at 5:30am Mr Horrocks and Ms Stark took the Senior boys and the Year 8 netball teams up to Perth to compete in a fun filled day. The whole day I was impressed with the amazing efforts from the Year 8 girls, who kept their chins up while versing some talented schools. They showed determination and strength to head back out on the court and give it another go after losing three games in a row.

The senior boys’ team, on the other hand, managed to win half of their games to bump their average up and make the finals possible. When they won their last game it took them into the preliminaries, and with a great performance there they went up the ladder and into the finals. Sadly, Harry Mooney, our outstanding goal shooter of the day, was injured in the preliminaries, so Jack Marrel had big shoes to fill in the finals.

The boys had more energy than I had ever seen going into the start of the finals. The game was intense and filled with great intercepts and passes, not only by Tayte Devenny and Matthew Young, but the whole team. The seconds counted down, and the scores were even as the timer went it. But the boys didn’t come all this way into the finals to go home with a draw, so the game went into overtime, consisting of two 3 minute halves. But surprisingly six minutes wasn’t enough to separate the margin and it was a draw again.

It was a race to two points in the end that finally broke the tie. The boys had won the day and Liam Dallimore didn’t let us forget it the whole way home. St Mary MacKillop College was officially the last school to leave the courts, but it was definitely worth it for a spot in the state finals once again. It was an outstanding day and great efforts were shown by all three teams. On behalf of the students that participated, I’d like to thank Mr Horrocks and Ms Stark for making the day possible. It will be one we won’t forget.
