Three girls from St Mary MacKillop College braved the World’s Greatest Shave for the first time this year, and raised almost $8,000 between them for the Leukaemia Foundation.

Year 12 student Clare Sakharova, Year 8 Netanya Brown and Year 7 student Piper Williams have all exchanged their long locks for a close-cropped ‘number three’ last weekend, to help raise money and awareness for people battling blood cancer, and to support their families.

Clare and Netanya were inspired by family members who suffered from Leukaemia, with Clare following her older sister’s participation in the shave last year. Netanya, who had considered participating last year, also wanted to “raise awareness to get more people to do the shave next year.”

The girls have been busy fundraising, and have had support not only from family and friends, but from a variety of other sources. Piper found that social media “helped a lot”, Netanya ventured into her local community, and Clare also raised funds at school and with a Bunnings sausage sizzle.

While all three girls love their new, short look, they are also looking forward to growing it again. “I really, really like it,” said Clare, “and I’m keen to experiment with it as it grows back.”
