Volcanoes erupt in Year 9 Science

The lava was flowing in Year 9 Science this week, as students completed the construction of their volcanoes and simulated eruptions with different chemical reactions. The students used their imagination and creative skills to design and make some amazing volcanoes using a variety of recycled materials, paper mâché and modelling clay.

Choosing either a ‘flowing’ or ‘explosive’ eruption, groups measured and combined ingredients with dishwashing liquid and red food colouring inside their volcanoes to create a visual demonstration of volcanic activity. Most popular was the explosive reaction, although students also varied the sequence, quantity and mixture of ingredients to create different, sometimes surprising, results.

The explosions were messy but everyone cheerfully and without hesitation helped in the clean-up. Well done, Year 9s.
