Our second game of the Kim Hughes Shield saw us play at our home ground, Barnard Park, against the highly rated Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School. It was played in very warm conditions and the toss could play a vital part in deciding the winner. As it turned out both captains each wished to do something different with the win of the toss and so both were happy for MacKillop to bat first.
Jarmon Smith and Ethan Beatty opened the batting and were confronted with a more than useful pair of opening bowlers. Each batsman did well to dig out endless yorkers and the odd short delivery, eventually seeing off the opening pace attack. Unfortunately, both batsmen played terrible shots to the new change of bowlers and were dismissed for far less than they looked like making. Shay Thackrah and Nic Barr, who both made runs in the first game, batted well together with Shay reaching 21 before being caught. Fraser Oates joined Nick at the crease and together they put on a partnership of 102 before Nic Barr was dismissed for 71 and soon after Fraser was dismissed for 47. Josh Wright made double figures quickly, and eventually the team was all out in the 40th over for a fine total of 203 runs.
Jesse Pes and Shay Thackrah opened the bowling but the defense of the opposition opening batsman proved strong and the opening partnership reached 81 before Ethan Beatty was able to dismiss one of the opening batsman for 14. The other opening batsman hit 64 runs before falling LBW to Nic Barr who was bowling left arm pace. The score at this stage was 2/98 in the 23rd over and Bunbury were happy with their start and on track to reach our total. Despite their number three going on to make 45 not out at the end, he failed to find enough fellow batsmen to build partnerships with and BCGS were unable to consolidate their good start as MacKillop eventually won the game by 20 runs. The best of the bowlers were Nic Barr and Jesse Pes who both took two wickets each.
Man of the match again goes to Nic Barr for his all round effort.
Year 9 student Matthew Codalonga, who took an impressive catch in the match, was also selected to represent the South West Regional Team at the Northam Regional Cricket Carnival, after a number of our students played well in the Peel/Rockingham Carnival representing Busselton-Margaret River Junior Cricket Association recently.
