Often during Lent we give up sweets and chocolates as a way of reminding ourselves of everything we take for granted in our lives, to inspire us to give to those in need.
The Secondary Student Council has found a brighter way to remind our students of the simple joys in life, by bringing back a forgotten childhood treat.
Their new fundraising venture for Project Compassion has been hugely popular, with many students taking the opportunity to brighten up the end of their week with Fairy Bread Fridays.
Secondary students have been swarming to the stall during recess each Friday to enjoy a little rainbow sprinkle on fresh, buttered bread. Stocks have sold out each time, and the Student Council expects this nostalgia to continue until the end of term, allowing them to raise funds for those whose idea of a rare treat may be nothing more than an extra bowl of rice.
Deprivation looks different from a teenager’s perspective, so they can be surprised to find joy in such a simple thing as fairy bread when they have been focused on the latest iPhone.
