Equestrian: College team in WA interschools championships

It has been 14 years now since the College community last had a representative equestrian team, so it was fantastic to see two of our students successfully represent St Mary MacKillop College at the WA InterSchools Championships during the April holidays.

The event was held over three days at the State Equestrian Centre in Brigadoon, promoting education and sportsmanship to young equestrian athletes. Students in both Primary and Secondary participate in a series of competitions, including show horse, dressage, show jumping and vaulting.

After a four-hour journey to Brigadoon, east of Perth, the girls spent five busy days prepping horses, competing, cleaning stables and walking horses every few hours.

Year 11 student Annie Creek has been riding since she was 4 years old, and competed in Working Hunter (show horse and show jumping), Combined Training (show jumping and dressage) as well as dressage with her ‘off-the-track’ thoroughbred, Sox. Annie was also invited to compete in the Interschools vs Jockeys Show Jumping Challenge held in the indoor arena on the Saturday night.

Year 9 student Katie Shepherd has been riding since she was 6 years old, and competed in show horse and dressage (preliminary and novice) riding her warmblood/Australian riding pony, Lola. Katie and Lola placed 4th overall in show horse.

Thank you to Sports Administration Assistant Ms Sandra Smith, who did so much behind the scenes as well as travelling up to support the riders and families over the weekend. Camping and meals were kindly provided by parents.

Congratulations to both riders on achieving personal bests at this competition. We look forward to sending this team and more in 2018.
