AFL: Senior girls and boys against GMAS

On Tuesday August 15, our Senior Girls and Senior Boys Football teams competed against Georgiana Molloy. The wet and windy conditions at the GMAS football oval set the scene for an enthralling afternoon of football.

The action commenced with our Year 11 and 12 girls setting a brutal standard for our boys to follow. Tearing out of the blocks, the girls opened the game strong. Riley Culnane clearly dominated the ruck contest, placing the ball on a silver platter to the midfielders who were quick to bomb the ball long into the forward line. Amy, Delaney, Abbey, and Clancy were dangerous at ground level setting up a number of goals during the first half.

The second half was a tighter contest as the rain set in and the girls battled gallantly, kicking into the breeze. The tackling and pressure from the girls throughout the game was outstanding and made for intriguing viewing. GMAS scored a couple of late goals and the siren sounded with a controversial end result. It was eventually called a draw.

The girls were a hard act to follow, and the boys couldn’t emulate their early endeavour, beginning the game a step slower than the GMAS boys who hit the scoreboard with a flurry. Our resilience soon began to shine through as we kicked a late couple of goals to bring the game within 12 points at half time. With the rain and wind doing it’s very best to deter the boys, and the deficit beginning to look insurmountable, Captain Fraser Oates reached for his Superman suit, and single handedly brought the game back into reach with three second half goals. Unfortunately our time ran out, leaving the boys less than a goal short of victory.

The afternoon proved a great success with both teams doing their College proud. Best players for the girls included Riley Culnane, Kian Fancote, Neve Clayton, Imogen Smith, and Chloe Donovan, while the boys were led by Fraser Oates, Mitch Tobin, Lucas Dean, and Brock Carpenter.

A re-match is on the cards and looks to be played during Week 7 of this term - so watch this space…
