Assembly and Awards (2EM): Your unique identity

Assembly and Awards (2EM): Your unique identity

Miss Meagher’s Year 2 class began their assembly by re-enacting the story ‘The Gifts of the Sun Goddess’. Its vibrant message – that what you might dislike about yourself could be the very quality that others strive for – relates to our studies on ‘Identity’. And what a spectacular job the narrators, Elijah Caruana, Quinn Whitty, Ellie MacGinlay, and Neve Foley, did, presenting the story. Mice, seals, owls and koalas went to Yhi, the sun goddess (played by Lola MacSevich, Belle Rockliff and Addison Sharp), and begged her to give them the gifts they longed for. The goddess granted all of these animals their wishes, taking away the qualities they initially possessed. They realised that these very qualities had excited the envy of others. Our unique abilities and attitudes help to build a strong community. The class shared a movie they created that displays the many different identities and talents that make up Room 7.

Onomatopoeia has also been a grammar focus recently in Year 2: when a word represents its sound. The song “Click go the Shears”, by the Aussie Bush Band, links the onomatopoeia of ‘CLICK’ with the students’ recent exploration of the Australian culture.

In English, Miss Meagher’s class has enjoyed looking into the identity of the aboriginal people. During the Dreamtime, the culture communicated stories using symbols in their artwork. Students had created their own story stones by drawing symbols onto rocks, and they brought some of these stories to life for the assembly audience.

“We had so much fun preparing for this assembly,” said Miss Meagher. “The children were like fireworks going off while waiting to perform for everyone, and afterwards they wished they could do it again!”
