Portraits win awards for students in Perth

Two Year 12 students from St Mary MacKillop College have once again won awards at the annual Secondary Angelico Art Exhibition, which opened in Perth last Monday.

The exhibition at the Forrest Centre in St Georges Terrace displays impressive artwork from Catholic schools across the state each year as part of the WA Catholic Arts Festival.
Leyla Allerton was awarded first prize in the Year 11/12 artwork 2D category for a pair of large portraits of her teenage ‘little brother’, done in wax crayon and ink. Leyla says of her artwork: “He isn’t so little anymore…yet the playful scribbles are reminiscent of childhood memories”.

A photo-collage of Jazz Naughton’s grandfather, titled Elders, earned the Year 12 student a Highly Commended as runner-up for the top prize, the Fra Angelico Award. Jazz describes her artwork, which she created using photographs of other family members, as representing “the influence older family members have on the development of family values”.

Both students were in Perth on Tuesday evening to receive their prizes during an awards event at the Forrest Centre in St Georges Terrace. St Mary MacKillop College student ambassadors and musicians also travelled to Perth to act as hosts for the evening, after 2016 graduate Emma Craig won the prestigious Fra Angelico Award at last year’s exhibition.
This is the second time the College has hosted the awards night in recent years, since MacKillop alumni Johaline Enslin also took out the top prize in 2014.

Head of Arts, Mr John Grace, said the College encourages all students to explore personal connection to broader issues and offers creative and alternative ways of expressing themselves as an essential part of their holistic education. “Our Visual Arts students work through a process of creative problem solving with an extensive choice of media and materials”, he says, “developing a valuable skill for any career path.”

The Angelico Exhibition is available for viewing from Monday-Friday, 9am-5pm at the Forrest Centre, 221 St Georges Terrace, Perth, until 25 August.
