Year 7 Freo Dockers Cup in Bunbury

On Tuesday 19 June, the Year 7 Girls and Boys AFL teams travelled to Hay Park in Bunbury to compete in the ACC Year 7 Freo Dockers Cup. A very busy fixture saw the students hop off the bus with just four minutes to the first bounce down and play five games without a break. Nevertheless, they fired up and found a groove early, with both teams emerging victorious in the wet, blustery conditions for their first game.

The rain settled for Round 2 match ups against Bunbury Cathedral Grammar. The girls’ team dominated for the whole game and came out with a convincing win. Grammar made gains early in the boys’ game with their size and physicality, but were unable to sustain the intensity for two halves, allowing MacKillop to take the game by a couple of goals in the end.

The next three games proved difficult for the boys against a strong Mandurah Catholic College, followed by two teams from Bunbury Catholic College. While they struggled to get ahead on the scoreboard, the boys won on many other levels during these matches and over the course of the day.

The girls also came up against a challenge in their third game, where a physical approach earned Mandurah Catholic College an early lead that they sustained throughout the match. The MacKillop girls were then outplayed by a more experienced A Team from Bunbury Catholic College in their fourth game to record a second loss, but clawed their way back to victory in the final game against the B team to finish with three wins out of five overall.

The students performed gallantly in all games, showing awesome teamwork and camaraderie, and represented the College proudly.
