Artist in Residence

South West artist, illustrator and designer Ian Mutch spent two full days this week working with Year 10 Visual Arts students on a set of murals for the College grounds.

Ian recently completed the Blue Whale public artwork on the Jetty and has given life to many other public spaces in and around Busselton and Dunsborough. His detailed and large-scale gallery works use drawing ink, acrylics, watercolour, aerosol and markers and are in high demand from Margaret River to Melbourne, Singapore, New York and London.

The brief that Ian and the Year 10 students worked with was to create a set of three circular panels, representing the emergence of St Mary MacKillop College and the students view of life at the College. Ian demonstrated aerosol, stencil cutting, drawing and hand painting techniques and the students were provided with an insight into the way a commercial Artist approaches a design brief. This experience will serve the Year 10 Visual Arts class well, as they embark on their new project, in which they are to design and create their own skateboard deck.
