Year 9 students building bridges in Perth

On Wednesday the 3rd of August, six Year 9 students were selected from extension science classes to attend Aurecon’s annual Bridge-Building competition at Scitech in Perth. Schools from regional and metropolitan areas all gathered to battle it out in the name of prize money and bragging rights.

The contest also raised awareness of the potential for engineering professions amongst the students involved, as well as encouraging them to innovate and create. The goal of the event was to construct a stable bridge using nothing but a small tube of pop-sticks, PVA glue and a reel of string.

Our two teams of three students each entered a bridge they had designed and built. They were judged by a panel of three Aurecon engineers on the day on their structural capability as well as creativity and strength.

MacKillop’s Team 1 and 2 held their own within the competition, despite not taking out the final prize. Logan Brookes, Brendan Allan and Finlaey Hewlett comprised Team 1, whilst Mika Langley, Justin McClurg and Nathan Bell were on Team 2.

Students were able to enjoy the rest of Scitech’s facilities before and after judging, which included a Planetarium viewing and a live Science show amongst other fun activities.
A huge thank you goes to Mr De Francesco and Mrs Taylor for accompanying students upon the trip (as well as battling peak hour traffic to get there!).
