Year 9 English students have recently begun a Budding Readers program with Year 4 and 5 students from the Primary campus, designed to foster a love of reading, improve literacy and promote bonds between the secondary and primary students. It has also been an opportunity for Year 9 students to develop their skills in verbal expression.
All participants completed a brief initial survey to gauge their current reading habits, and then viewed a powerpoint which conveyed the merits of reading for our brain. Year 9 students researched and selected picture books suitable for Year 4 and 5 students, and role-played reading activities with peers before meeting their primary school buddies. The first shared activity involved reading picture books together with their buddies, with both age groups having a chance to read out loud.
The program will continue with buddies meeting regularly for activities throughout Term 3, as well as writing letters to each other.
