Teacher teams lay down the challenge in Augusta

For all those students who competed in the Anaconda Adventure Race at Augusta over the weekend, it's time to pull out your results and set them against our SMMC staff team results.

Twenty-three St Mary MacKillop College staff members (including one former and one currently on long service leave) formed a total of four teams in the Mini Anaconda on Saturday and another three teams in Sunday's big race, with some impressive results.

The SMMC teams comprised of six Maths teachers, four Phys Ed teachers and four administration staff across primary and secondary, as well as Science, D&T, English and HASS staff, primary teachers, with three HoLAs, a Head of Year and a Head of School in the mix.

Saturday's race saw two all-female staff teams up against two mixed teams in the mini race. After a blistering swim from Mrs Pearsall, hot on the heels of Mr Pavlinovich, Mini Teams #498 and #660 were off to a great start. When Mrs Behiels hit heavy traffic on the bike trails, it looked like the Team #498 ladies were going from strength to strength with a great mountain-bike leg from Miss Caulfield followed by a solid run by Ms Love. It took a powerful paddle from Mr Parry to threaten their lead, and in the end Team #661 came back to finish a mere 16 seconds behind!

While Mr Pavlinovich and Mrs Pearsall returned for another swim on Sunday morning, Mr Parry and Mr Byrne swapped disciplines for the full distance race. Mr Pav took the paddle out hard to start, and with Mr Armstrong following up on the mountain-bike, it looked like the mixed team was long gone. But Mr Vollprecht's fresh legs in the shallow swim course, and then a lightning fast run from Mr Taylor, saw the veteran team peg them back to finish within ten minutes.

MacKillop staff achievements included top 10 female and mixed team finishes, top 10 female and mixed team swims, the fastest veteran swim as well as some super-fast transitions over what was both a challenging and thoroughly enjoyable weekend.

All staff team members performed very well, and should feel proud to be 'walking the talk', as they encourage students to create a balanced life academically, socially and physically, to step out of their comfort zone and to choose life with courage.
