The following article was written by Year 10 student Gabriella Ward on work experience at the Busselton Dunsborough Times, and was published on 28 October:
Busselton residents may have noticed teenagers popping up in businesses all over town this week. The temporary ‘employees’ are Year 10 St Mary MacKillop College students busy on their work experience week.
While some worked in restaurants or retail, I had the privilege of working with editor Cameron Myles and journalist Chloe Fraser at the Busselton Dunsborough Times.
It was a hectic week, rushing to write articles and meet the amazing people willing to discuss local issues and events. But overall it was a highly enjoyable experience with many highlights.
One highlight was meeting Ian Mitchell and John Stevens of the Yallingup Rural Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade. They were friendly and welcoming and it felt good to help a community group dedicated to keeping the region safe.
I learnt much about the editing process and how much devotion is put into the Times, as well as picking up on some journalism techniques myself. This opportunity has taught me much about the extensive community and the newspaper business.
I will be sad to go but I will be leaving with serious consideration of journalism as a future career.
