Mountain Bike Interschool Challenges

Mountain Bike Interschool Challenges

St Mary MacKillop College Year 7/8 teams took out third and fifth places in the inaugural WA Inter School Mountain Bike Challenge on Sunday 21 May.

Tom Meyer, Kelly Harding and Corey Bottica from Year 8, along with Denham Stewart, Ethan Lauro and Toby East from Year 7, represented the College in the 3 hour event in wet conditions on the Kambarang bike track east of Donnybrook.  Nearly 50 students from seven schools took part in the relay race in teams of three. Our Year 8 team received medals for third place, while our Year 7 team also earned themselves fifth place in the Year 7/8 category.

The cross country course at Cycletrek, Kambarang in Lowden was modified to cater for all abilities without losing the integrity of a cross country mountain bike trail, and ranged over 4km of singletrack and gravel road (for passing sections), including the famous big log roll over. The track conditions were perfect despite heavy rain the night before. A few light showers and cold temperatures during the event did not dampen enthusiasm, with the average rider managing 3-4 laps each over the 3 hours. Categories included Year 7/8, Year 9/10 and Year 11/12 teams.

The event was kindly sponsored by C4 City Cycles, Bunbury and the SW Mountain Bike Club which kept entry fees to only $10. Mountain Bike Australia supplied quality prize medals for the kids in the winning teams to treasure. It was a highly enjoyable event for competitors and spectators alike, which the Club hopes to be able to repeat next year, with more WA schools and teams encouraged to attend.
