Senior Visual Arts Excursions

Senior Visual Arts students enjoyed some opportunities recently to experience the works and techniques of contemporary artists both locally and in Perth. This included exploring both finished artworks and the art making process itself, giving students an idea of artists’ different intentions and methods in making art.

Year 11 ATAR students experienced a full day in an intensive painting and drawing workshop with the very talented artist Aidan Lee Smith at Art Geo in Busselton. Highly regarded as a local artist who regularly explores the theme of identity and narrative in his painting and collage artworks, Aidan has been a fulltime artist since 2015, when he sold every painting at his debut exhibition in Cowaramup.

As part of their course work, Year 11 students are currently looking at identity in art, and making informed choices about materials, skills, techniques and process to create their own artworks. Aidan guided them through the experience of successfully combining the use of different materials such aerosol, painting mediums, acrylics and drawing media to create unique artworks.
The Year 12 Visual Arts students in both the ATAR and General courses travelled to Perth to view the latest Hatched exhibition at PICA (Perth Institute of Contemporary Art) located in the city’s Cultural Centre. Hatched showcases the best contemporary artworks from local universities and TAFE institutions. With an informative guided tour, the students had the opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the artists’ intentions and methods.

While in Perth, the Year 12 students also visited Edith Cowan University’s Mt Lawley campus for a guided tour of the Art and Media Department and the excellent facilities on offer.
Next term, we look forward to hosting the annual Angelico Art Award at the Catholic Arts Festival in August. This will be the second time the College hosts this award, after winning the Fra Angelico Award in both 2014 and 2016. We also start preparations next term for the College’s annual Art Exhibition, to be held in Term 4
