Sporting grants introduce the world of gymnastics

Our Primary students have the opportunity to explore the world of gymnastics this term, thanks to two grants from Sporting Schools.

Students in Pre Primary to Year 3 have spent the last four weeks learning a number of skills during sessions run by Joanne Hill from Horizon Gymnastics. The program is designed to challenge individual abilities and encourage cooperation and inclusion, with many activities conducted in groups or with partners.

The Launchpad Program is a Gymnastics Australia initiative, introducing safe and enjoyable activities based on the fundamental movement patterns of gymnastics: spring, landing, locomotion, static, swing and rotation. It includes a focus on safety landings, introductory gymnastic shapes and balances such as ‘tuck sit’ and ‘angry cat’ as well as how to perform the ‘log roll’ safely.

Sports teacher Mrs Adele Ryan said the students have enjoyed the opportunity to “dance, listen and move in a variety of ways” during each class. She adds that they have also worked through specific moves designed to target upper body conditioning.

“A strong core and upper body not only prepares them for handstands,” says Jo Hill, “but assists in maintaining focus by being able to sit comfortably for longer periods before becoming restless”.

A second grant will also enable our Year 4-6 students to enjoy gymnastics sessions later this term.
