Artist in Residence: Rachelle Dusting

Year 12 Visual Arts students enjoyed the opportunity to participate in a full day incursion with Perth based Artist Rachelle Dusting recently. A 2013 honours graduate in Fine Arts at UWA, Rachelle is well known for her hyper-realistic painting style. She has completed portraits of several influential WA artists, and is currently working on several large-scale murals in Perth and surrounds.

A talented painter and emerging WA artist, Rachelle shared several complex oil painting techniques gleaned from recent workshops with world-renowned artists Maria Teicher and David Kassan in New York. She walked students through a number of exercises using a variety of common oil paint colours and focusing specifically on creating highlights and tone.

The students found Rachelle’s expert tips on creating flesh tones extremely helpful as they start on artworks for their current Year 12 Visual Arts unit. Working within the theme of Commentaries, many students are creating portraits in oil for their final piece, and were inspired by Rachelle’s passion for portraiture. “I love getting to know people and hearing their stories - particularly from those who have vision to impact and inspire others in their community and beyond,” Rachelle said of her work. “It’s capturing the likeness and character of a person to reveal glimpses of their journey which inspires me.”
