Year 8 Solar Car Challenge in Bunbury

Year 8 students from the College competed in the Solar Car Challenge in Bunbury on Tuesday, placing third overall after a number of heats.

Xavier Mockford, Julius Bain, Gabe Doolan and Thomas Toohey designed and built their solar car over the last three weeks in preparation for the first regional leg since the national competition began two years ago. The boys spent lunchtimes and weekends testing and perfecting their design, solving problems and making small adjustments along the way.

Their hard work paid off, as the MacKillop team performed extremely well for most of the afternoon. Their solar car easily won each heat, before a couple of unlucky track snags in the semi-final hampered them against cars they had previously beaten.

The boys were awarded $30 from sponsor Synergy, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. Head of Science, Mr Defrancesco, said it was great to see so much enthusiasm from the students, who kept finding ways to improve their car’s performance. “We look forward to another go at it next year.”
