VET Week and Try-a-Trade

VET Week and Try-a-Trade

In partnership with Skilled Hire, fifteen Year 10 students participated in a four-day Try-a-Trade course recently at the College. The students, who showed an interest in apprenticeship, trades or the Building and Construction industry, gained valuable knowledge and skills across a range of activities including erecting and dismantling scaffold, bricklaying, brick paving, carpentry and joinery. The students also attained their White Card, which is an industry standard OH&S qualification required for working in these types of jobs.

Head of Technologies Mr Steve Parry said it was pleasing to witness the “high level of participation and enjoyment” displayed by these students. “There’s a high skills shortage in WA,” he pointed out, and said that opportunities such as Try-a-Trade are a “valuable first step” towards being aware of the vocation pathways available to students, and offers “insight into the College’s MIS program for Year 11 and 12”.

Year 11 students have also been busy in Design & Technology, as they settle into the College’s Manufacturing Industry Studies pathway.

During VET Week this month, MIS students completed their certificates in Senior First Aid, Fire Awareness and Fire Extinguisher Use. The Year 11 students will also attain nationally accredited competencies including Working at Heights and Assembling Scaffold to Restricted Heights, and will gain experience in wall frame construction, as they construct a cubby house using industry skills.

“These activities and projects add value to our students’ skill set,” says Mr Parry. “This provides them with broader pathways to the high level of employment opportunities currently available in the Building and Construction industry.”
