The St Mary MacKillop College Inter House Athletics Carnival took place over three weeks of competition, including 1500m distance races and various events of both track and field.
The K-4 Carnival began on Wednesday 9 May with students enjoying a beautiful day filled with fun and participation. Adding hurdles and some unique novelty events to the day created wonderful highlights for both students and spectators. The Year 6 House Captains all showed excellent leadership qualities in helping to organise competitors and generating House Spirit throughout the day. McCormack jumped to a convincing lead at the end of this first day, with Kelly managing a steady second place.
On Friday 11 May, students in Years 5-8 took to the track, with records set for the first time in Years 5 and 6 including Turbo Jav and Shot Put. There were also some records broken, including the Year 8 Girls Discus record – which has stood since 1996 – broken by Celerina Reyes’ throw of 19.15m. Kelly and McCormack battled it out for first and second spot in the House points - Kelly won the day but McCormack managed to stay just in front on progressive points.
Years 9-12 rounded out the Athletics Carnival on Friday 18 May with impressive individual performances in the field events, building to a hard fought battle for points on the track in the 100m and relay events. Kian Fancote smashed the Year 12 Girls Javelin record by over two metres, while Serena Martin and Reuben Thew broke both 100m records for Year 12, set in 2005. The day went to Kirrane, who put in a massive effort, almost doubling their total points on this final day. However, Kelly’s consistency throughout the two weeks saw them emerge as the Champion House overall.
Head of Sport, Andrew Culnane, says he is grateful to staff and students who helped make the carnival run so smoothly, and to all the parents who were able to support their children on the day. “It was wonderful to see the enthusiasm demonstrated by all the students in both track and field events.”
