Year 7 and 8 Activity Week

Year 7 and 8 Activity Week

Year 7 and 8 students had the Secondary campus to themselves for most of this week, with Years 9-12 on camps, service and work experience activities. They took this opportunity to explore pastoral topics such as mental health, organisation and leadership skills, local history, wildlife and Aboriginal heritage, and got in some fun excursions from Dunsborough to Bunbury.

The term started for Year 7s with an Aboriginal Heritage Day, where students heard some indigenous music and history, explored dot painting and played some traditional games. They also tasted some bush tucker and damper, and even tried their hand at throwing a boomerang. Aboriginal Liaison officer Lisa Weston said the day was designed to give students an understanding of Aboriginal culture through the traditional methods of music and storytelling.

On Wednesday the Year 7s spent the day with Mark Clayden from 4TheTeam for a Leadership Day. Students learned about the various qualities of leadership, the different types of leadership and developed a number of key leadership skills such as problem solving, communication and team-building.

Year 8 student groups rotated through a number of hands-on activities throughout the week, including cooking and making gifts for their mums. They all enjoyed a session of rock climbing in the gym, and also tried out their comic drawing skills. On Thursday they visited the Bunbury Wildlife Park and Bunbury Museum, as well as taking the time to enjoy the variety of street art on display during a walk around the city.

Both year groups enjoyed a visit to the local cinema and a cool but sunny day at Xscape at the Cape in Dunsborough.
