Senior Boys and Girls AFL: cross-town match-up

Senior students headed to GMAS recently to play a couple of energetic and entertaining cross-town AFL matches in what looks to become a regular competition between the two schools for both girls and boys.

It was a very physical match for the girls, with Kate Dickson, Kian Fancote, Natasha Warchol and Beige Harris just managing to keep the ‘MacKillop Marys’ in the game. We may have had age and experience on our side, but there was much more agility and pace in the younger, fitter GMAS forward line, and the girls struggled to stop the flow of goals coming in.

It was a more evenly matched competition for the boys. Hard running and skills from the ‘MacKilla Gorillas’ ensured no weak links around the ground and saw them on top in the first half. But the home ground advantage created a strong momentum swing for GMAS in the second half, and the crowd erupted as the scores wound up dead level at the fulltime siren.

Not content with a draw, the teams agreed to five minutes extra time each way. The boys dug deep, inspired by “the spirit of Mary MacKillop”, and managed to win the game by two points.

A huge thanks to Morgan Stark, Liana Purella, Mark Taylor, Paul Northover, Sandy Smith and Al Christie for coming along to help with the afternoon. It was very much appreciated and the students had a great time!
