Hockey: Buchanan Cup Semi Finals 2018

After a massive effort at the ACC Hockey Carnival in Bunbury two months ago, the College’s Senior Girls Hockey Team faced some formidable opponents when they advanced to the semi-finals of the Buchanan Cup at Perth Hockey Stadium.

The girls were excited and nervous as they head up to a wet and cold day in Perth to play five games against quality opposition. “It’s been a number of years since the College has been invited to play at this level of competition,” remarked the team’s coach, Mrs Camilla Culnane. “I am very proud of them to make it to this level.”

It was a tough start with their first game against Como Secondary College, who had won the competition many times in the past. The girls put in a valiant effort, but went down 3-0. Their second game was more closely matched against Manea, with Sailor Townsend scoring two great goals for a final score of 3-2.

Bunbury Senior High School were also a very good side, beating the girls 2-0 in their third game, and ending up overall winners of the day.
The girls fought hard in their last two games for the day, and although they failed to score, they only conceded a single goal each game against Bunbury Catholic and the second Como Secondary College team.

Despite the impressive calibre of the opposing teams, it was a St Mary MacKillop College Team player, Ella Du Preez, who took home the Fairest and Best individual medal for the entire day’s competition. This was a fantastic effort against many great players.
