From Monday the first of April, the College will be trialling a part time addition to the Library team. His name is Chief, and he’s a two year old labradoodle.

Chief will be at the College one day per week as a Wellness Dog, giving students and staff opportunities to benefit from the support of animal companionship. He has a relaxed and gentle temperament, and has been trained to comfortably accept petting by strangers, children and crowds of all ages and abilities. Chief is registered with Animal Companions as a visiting dog suitable for hospitals, nursing homes and special needs facilities as well as schools and public events. His coat is also hypoallergenic, making him a suitable companion for people who may suffer from allergies.

“Animals reduce stress in people and have a wonderful, calming influence on us all,” says College Counsellor, Belinda Butler Ohalloran. “Developing strategies for reducing stress in everyday life is a focus for both students and staff, and research shows that pets can serve as an important social and emotional support.”

Students will find Chief in the Primary Library with Mrs Somma on Monday mornings to allow students to visit as they start their week. After recess he’ll be in the Secondary Library with Mrs Muste, ready for a pat and to offer companionship to older students.

Librarian Kerry Muste says the library is quiet and accessible, allowing Chief to be available for all students and staff without confronting those who may not be comfortable with dogs. “He’ll spend most of his time in my office or curled up behind the desk,” she said.
