Year 10 & 11 students attend P.A.R.T.Y Programme

On Friday 12th August, twenty students from Year 10 and Year 11 participated in the P.A.R.T.Y Programme.

Held at St John of God Hospital in Bunbury, the PARTY Programme (Preventing Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth), engages students in a number of presentations that educate young people about the life changing consequences of certain risk taking behaviours, particularly when travelling in vehicles, and in the company of drugs.

Sessions are conducted by Nurses, Doctors, Paramedics, and Drug Educators. A tour of the Emergency Department and ICU (Intensive Care Unit), allowed the students a behind the scenes look at what happens when a patient presents with critical injuries, as the result of a major trauma.

Students were given the opportunity to experience the limitations that a spinal trauma patient has to live with, as Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech Therapists guided them through eating thickened liquid meals, as well as getting dressed and sitting on a chair, without the use of their legs.

Students were privileged to be spoken to by Paul and Jess from the Paraplegic Benefit Fund, both who have sustained major spinal injuries and are wheel chair bound. This inspiring session was an eye opener to all who were in attendance and concluded the programme on a very sobering note.

The PARTY Programme is a worthwhile and valuable experience for all who attend. The programme is seeking further funding in the hope that every Year 10 student, has the opportunity to attend in future. In the meantime, senior students are encouraged to put their hand up for this experience next year.
