Primary classes are getting into the Olympic Spirit

The Olympic Spirit has been a key motivator this week on the Primary campus, inspiring students to learn not just in sports, but also in History, Geography, Art, Literacy and Maths classes.

Mrs Christie’s Year 1 class has been comparing the modern day Olympics with the original version in Ancient Greece. Students made their own gold, silver and bronze medals, as well as wreaths like the ancient Greek athletes would have received. In art they have also been making and colouring flags from countries that compete in Olympics from around the world, while in Geography they have been tracking on the world map where the Olympic torch relay travelled from Greece all the way to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.

The Year 1s have also been looking at the different symbols and vocabulary of the Olympics, and the various events that countries participate in. Mr Wallace helped them to learn about the importance of Maths within the Olympics, looking at the scores, tallies and data that are recorded and compared for each sport.

In Mr Magee’s Year 3 class, the students wrote what they already know about the Olympics and questions they would like to know on a series of post-its. Students then consolidated their knowledge by cross-checking to see if any of their questions were already answered in the ‘what we know’ post-its. They are now researching the remaining questions for answers, so we can move them to the ‘what we know’ side…and adding more questions as they arise.
