Year 9 Junior MasterChef cook

There was beautiful sushi, flavourful curry and decadent pancakes, but it was chocolate and berries that won over our judges and their tastebuds in the Year 9 Junior MasterChef cook-off last week.

Our Year 9 Food and Nutrition students have been learning an array of cooking techniques and methods this term, which culminated in a ‘Junior Master Chef’ competition last week to put their new skills to the test. Cooking off in pairs against their classmates with a recipe of their own choosing, students were given one lesson to prepare their recipe and one lesson to cook and present to the judges.

Mr Tony Papasergio stood in for the cravat-wearing Matt Preston on the judging panel, joined by Mrs Margaret Skinner and Mrs Christine Taylor. The judges had a chance to wander through the class during the cooking process and speak to students about the dishes they were preparing. The groups were extremely focussed and a little nervous at times, but all did a fabulous job and we were extremely proud of their achievements. Judges awarded points for skills, presentation and taste.

In Tuesday’s class, Imogen Milner and Indigo Swan scored 19/20 for their delicious Chocolate Nachos with Berry Salsa. Wednesday saw a draw between two groups with a score of 19/20: Charley Morrant and Teal Emery produced some mouth-watering Chocolate Macaroons, while Benjamin Hanna and Matthew Codalonga plated up a beautiful Chocolate Pot with Berry Sorbet.
