Warming winter for those in need

Warming winter for those in need

Year 11 students met with Darren Reynolds, an education officer from The Salvation Army, last week, who spoke about what poverty actually looks like statistically in Perth, what social justice groups do to help end cyclical poverty and the amazing support they offer those in need. Our donations allow these social justice groups to provide not only immediate help but also, hopefully, the opportunity of a better life. While the Year 7 students had a lot of fun at their disco during camp week earlier this term, the $850 they raised will add to the impressive work these groups do in our community every day to assist people in need and combat social injustice across Australia.

St Mary MacKillop College is one of many schools who actively support the annual Winter Appeals of St Vincent de Paul and other social justice groups, ensuring that some of the many people in our community who need our support this winter will get it. Year 9 students have donated food and hygiene products to the St Vincent de Paul Winter Appeal, while our Year 7s took on the challenge of knitting squares this term. These squares have been stitched together by one of our generous parents, Mrs Bernie Rowe, into beautiful blankets to be donated to the Winter Appeal, along with more blankets kindly purchased by the P&F. For the students who did persevere, it was exciting to proudly spot their knitted square in the blankets, knowing that they are supporting a great cause and making a difference to our world.
