Year 10 student Riley Culnane has recently returned from Adelaide, where she represented WA in the School Sport Australia 15 & Under Netball grand final against NSW. At the end of the six day tournament, WA was crowned national champions and Riley was one of four WA players named in the All Australian Team, who will be touring to Fiji in 2017.
After dropping their first two games of the tournament by narrow margins against NSW and Victoria, the WA girls rallied to win their next two convincingly, positioning themselves in the top four for the preliminaries. They played Victoria again to secure a spot in the grand final, and then defeated NSW by 7 points to take out the championships. “It was great because WA hasn’t won for 28 years” said Riley, “so to come home with the gold medal was really exciting.”
Riley said it was exciting to realise that the all hard work she’s been putting in has produced results. She has her family to thank for their encouragement and support through it all. “Mum has been coach, mentor and physio, and Dad has been good support, too.”
