Assembly and Awards (6LL): exploring the brain

Ms Leyden’s Year 6 class from Room 18 shared some of what they have been learning about the brain this week from their Health lessons. They learned about the physiology of the brain - all the major parts - and how each has special roles that help us function every day.

The students explained that we have billions of neurons carrying electrical impulses in our brain. These neurons help to learn and remember information, as well as allowing us to move around.

Learning all of this information can be tiring, so they also demonstrated taking a 'brain break' to make sure we took care of ourselves. The class has been visiting ‘Moose Tube’ and learning some great songs. They performed the ‘Pizza Man’ song with actions for the assembly.

The Year 6 students then shared a slide show of what they have been doing in class. They have been busy making brains out of coloured play-dough, which helped them become very familiar with the different lobes and their functions. They also had fun dissecting lamb brains to investigate what a real brain looks like – “seriously gross!”

After the merit certificates, students explained how important it is to take care of our brains. We can do this by eating healthy foods, drinking lots of water, sleeping for 8 hours a night and resting. By now, everyone was feeling frazzled from our research, so the class suggested another ‘brain break’ and asked the whole assembly to join in with the 'Pizza Man' song.

Congratulations to following merit certificate winners for this week:
