Assembly and Awards (3RT): Harmony celebrates inclusion, diversity and unity

Mr Thompson’s Room 9 assembly was based on themes covered by the Year 3 students in the Humanities and Social Sciences Curriculum.

The assembly commenced with the Welcome to Country acknowledging the Noongar people’s connection to this country.

This was followed by a song called Welcome. The song was written by Ruby Hunter, a Ngarrindjeri-Pitjanjatara woman from the Coorong. It’s a beautiful song that welcomes the landscape and animals in a celebration of Australian unity. Images of native animals painted in the style of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists were displayed on the video screen while the students sang.

The students performed three traditional dreamtime stories. The Rainbow Serpent described how the landscape was created and explained the appearance of the rainbow. How the Kangaroo Got Her Pouch showed how kangaroo was rewarded for her kindness. How Uluru Was Made explained the origin of our iconic rock. The props and costumes were minimal, but effective, and well received by the audience.

The first act of the assembly closed with the students’ paintings of Uluru displayed on the screen, backed by a modern didgeridoo soundtrack.

Following the Junior Merit Award presentation the theme of the assembly moved to a recognition of the recent Harmony Day celebrations. The students identified their country of origin and then sang a song called We Are One celebrating the unity of all people as one family.

The Senior Merit awards were presented and the assembly was concluded with a song called Proud to be Australian, confirming the harmony and unity of all Australians in our multicultural society.
