Year 9 Science and Engineering Challenge in Bunbury

Year 9 Science and Engineering Challenge in Bunbury

A group of Year 9 students travelled to the South West Sports Centre in Bunbury on Friday 5 May to take part in the ‘Science and Engineering Challenge’.

Managed by the Rotary Club of Bunbury-Leschenault, this day of activity allows students to experience aspects of science and engineering they may not encounter in a school environment, and compete against other schools in problem-solving tasks using scientific and mathematical understanding in practical applications. The aim is to inspire students to make a difference in the world by choosing a career in science and engineering.

“Once we all got into our teams we headed to our designated stations and were met by challenges none of us had ever thought of before: like how to build the most accurate catapult, devise the sturdiest mars buggy or connect up the most houses to power. After a lot of trial and error, we all started to get the hang of our challenges.

“Although we didn't all win our individual group activities, we were all very happy with the result of winning the prestigious finale – the bridge construction event in which we managed to get the ‘super ingot’ weight across our bridge.

“It was a wonderful day, and we thank Mr De Francesco and Mr Harmer for coming along with us.”
