Assembly and Awards 5MB: Genius, role model, bush poet

Ms Barnard’s Year 5 class began their assembly this week by describing Genius Hour, where the students have been devoting an hour each week to researching topics that they felt passionate about, before presenting the information using their chrome books. Topics included how to stop bullying and cyber-bullying, the dangers of smoking, saving endangered animals and how to stop litter in our oceans.

The students from Room then shared what they had discovered during their research project about famous indigenous Australian, and explained why they thought that these people were great role models for all of us. Their lives as teachers, scientists, politicians, entertainers and athletes may have taken them far away from their traditional home, but they still have a strong relationship with their Country and people.

Students shared what they had been learning in English about Australian bush poetry, convict songs and bush ballads describing the harsh way of life for early settlers, drovers and shearers in the Australian bush. The class finished their assembly by performing the poem, ‘Brumby’s Run’, written by Banjo Patterson.
