Forensic scientists for a day

Students at the Primary campus got the chance to put their science skills to the ultimate test recently, as they worked on solving a real life police case.

Thrown into the middle of a police investigation, students in Years 3-6 used some of the science they have been learning in class along with skills they developed during the workshop to solve the case of a missing child.

“The incursion was super enjoyable,” said Elise in Year 5, “because we got to discover things that were a mystery.”

From examining fingerprints and animal ‘scat’ to exploring the technology of digital microscopes and ultra violet light, students looked at the many different areas of forensic science that worked together to help find a boy who disappeared from his home overnight.

This workshop was run by Education Interactive and has been developed by a member of the NSW Police Force to demonstrate the importance and practical application of science in our day to day lives, and to help nurture a passion for science in students of all ages. Manager Alyssa Van Soest says, “there is nothing more rewarding than seeing that ‘light-bulb’ moment where a student realises ‘I can do this. I can solve this crime. I could be a forensic scientist!’”
