Year 7 students play in Freo Dockers Cup

A team of 24 Year 7 boys travelled up to Hay Park in Bunbury last Tuesday to represent the College in the ACC Freo Dockers Cup. Their first game against Mandurah Baptist College was a convincing start to the carnival, with the boys achieving a four goal win. The team moved the ball smoothly down the field and worked well in defense.

The second game against Bunbury Cathedral Grammar saw MacKillop down by more than two goals at half time, but they managed to use the wind to their advantage in the second half and put constant pressure on their opposition. It was an exciting finish to the game, with the result a draw.

The boys played consistent football in their third game, but were unable to match the seven goals kicked by eventual cup winners, Bunbury Catholic College. The boys contested well in the last two games, and lost these only by very narrow margins.

During the carnival there was strong defense by Drew Clarke, consistent pressure by Matthew Burgess, a couple of sneaky goals by Ethan Lovejoy and some good runs down the wing by Dylan Vernon. Francis Toovey received player of the day. The team as a whole are to be congratulated for their sportsmanship and commitment over all five games.

Twenty-four very keen and excited Year 7 girls also travelled to Bunbury to try their hand at AFL. With a mix of different football abilities, the girls played four games against local schools. They started well, winning their first game by 3 points with Asha Hughes scoring a goal assisted by Molly Greaves.

The girls displayed amazing teamwork throughout, but the remainder of their matches proved much more challenging. After a brutal defeat to Mandurah, Alix Ness managed two behinds and Felicity Watson also got a minor score against Bunbury Catholic College, but with fatigue and injuries creeping in, the girls struggled to fight back. Still, they continually encouraged each other to run a little faster, jump a little higher and tackle a little stronger throughout the day.

It was fantastic to see the high level of participation and enjoyment from all the girls. Special mention to Asha Hughes, Dakota Nelmes, Alix Ness and Kaitlyn Taylor for their sportsmanship and great attitude.
