Book week: through the ‘wardrobe’ into fantasy

Year 7 students celebrated Book Week recently with a ‘fantasy hat tea party’ in the library at recess.

Staff decorated the Library entrance as a wardrobe portal into Narnia, complete with coat rack, snow covered trees and lamppost.

The library invited students to create a hat or mask based on a fantasy creature or imaginative creation of their own.

Wind tunnel challenge for Year 8 students

During Week 6, the Year 8 students participated in a wind tunnel challenge workshop facilitated by Questacon Smart Skills. The workshop took students through the innovation process of think, make, try and refine.

“We learned about wind-tunnels, indoor skydiving, ‘proto-storming’ and MacGyver,” said Year 8 student Marc Aquino, who enjoyed the challenge of engineering an object using limited materials that will float in a wind tunnel for a minimum of ten seconds.

Forensics workshop inspires Yr10 students

Year 10 Extension Science students got the chance to put their logical and problem solving skills to the test this week, as they worked on solving a real life police case in an interactive forensics workshop. The students gained hands-on experience in forensic science and the processes that forensic scientists carry out in their occupation.

Students work with DNA mutations in medical research

Year 12 Human Biology students from St Mary MacKillop College visited the Lotterywest Biodiscovery Centre this week at the Harry Perkins Institute of Medical Research in Perth.

Research scientists at the new QEII Medical Centre in Nedlands provided the students with opportunities to work with real DNA in a Level 2 Laboratory and to better understand methods of identifying DNA mutations.

ACC Hockey Challenge South West

On Thursday, 22nd June the St Mary MacKillop College girls and boys hockey teams travelled to Bunbury to play against three other schools in the ACC Hockey competition for the South West.

Our boys’ team knew they would be facing a challenging day, with half the team made up of Year 7 and Year 8 students.
