Timor 2017 Team has over 50,000 reasons to smile

The Timor 2017 fundraising total is now $52,000. The difference this money will make to the lives of the children we support in Timor is immeasurable. This year's fundraising equates to:

3 Kindergarten classrooms
6 classrooms accessing electricity for the first time
7 students accessing tertiary education
13 computers for schools in two areas
61 families being given a clutch of three chickens to ensure protein in children's diets
Shelving for the local library in a Baguia
Repairs to a school chapel and a kindergarten in Haekoni
Many more school children accessing education who could otherwise not afford it.

Senior Visual Arts Excursions

Senior Visual Arts students enjoyed some opportunities recently to experience the works and techniques of contemporary artists both locally and in Perth. This included exploring both finished artworks and the art making process itself, giving students an idea of artists’ different intentions and methods in making art.

Students show solidarity in silence for refugees

Year 12 students at St Mary MacKillop College ended Refugee Week in Australia on Friday 23 June by participating in a Circle of Silence to highlight and raise awareness of the difficulties faced by refugees.

Standing shoulder to shoulder in solidarity and leadership, many wore placards they had handwritten in response to the ‘voiceless-ness’ of many people seeking asylum and being displaced from their homelands around the world.

Year 9 Junior MasterChef cook

There was beautiful sushi, flavourful curry and decadent pancakes, but it was chocolate and berries that won over our judges and their tastebuds in the Year 9 Junior MasterChef cook-off last week.

Our Year 9 Food and Nutrition students have been learning an array of cooking techniques and methods this term, which culminated in a ‘Junior Master Chef’ competition last week to put their new skills to the test.

Beyond the Beaker

On Monday and Tuesday the Scitech Roadshow visited the Secondary campus, engaging Year 7-9 students in a number of colourful and energetic presentations designed to stimulate interest in science. They explored some of the innovations that are opening up science career prospects across a range of industries.

ACC Cross Country 2017

St Mary MacKillop College students competed well in the 2017 ACC Cross Country event, held on Thursday 1 June at Alderbury Reserve in Perry Lakes, Perth. With a total of 67 schools competing across ten categories, seven of our teams finished in the top 20 for their category, with an impressive sixth place for the U/13 Boys’ team, as well as seventh place for both the U/15 Girls’ and U/16 Boys’ teams.

Year 10 students Try-a-Trade

It was a busy Week Five for a group of Year 10 students who elected to participate in Try-a-Trade Week: completing a number of building and construction activities at our off site facilities in the Busselton Trade Training Centre.

Students spent the week working towards their White Card certification and learning how to set out and lay bricks and brick pavers while constructing a courtyard.

Students from Year 8 & 9 attended the Sorry Day event held at Wellington Square in East Perth on Friday 26 May. The event was a fantastic opportunity for our students to join in the discussion on Reconciliation, to recognise the resilience and strength of Australia’s first people, and to celebrate their history and the breadth of Indigenous culture.

Secondary Swimming Carnival Results

The Secondary campus Inter House Swimming Carnival was held at the Geographe Leisure Centre on Friday 17 February 2017. We have had an impressive number of students attending training in the two weeks prior to the carnival and the exceptional performances on the day reflect the efforts of our talented and hardworking students.

Canberra 2016

Earlier this month 30 students and three teachers set off for Canberra to were undertake an educational tour of the National Capital. Whilst on the tour, they participated in a variety of educational programs focused on Australian history, culture, heritage and democracy.
