Curiosity Academy explores Womens Business

On the first day back in Term 4, the Curiosity Academy’s PALS group continued to learn about the history and traditions of Aboriginal women. Lea Taylor, an Indigenous artist of the Wandardi people (and second cousin to our Secondary campus librarian, Christine Taylor), came in to share her knowledge and skills in creating traditional woven baskets with the students.

Primary SWPSA Athletics Carnival

After a false start due to wet weather, the College’s Primary Athletics squad travelled to Bunbury last Thursday to compete in the SWPSA interschool athletics carnival against nine other primary schools from the region.

The students performed exceptionally well throughout the day with outstanding running, throwing, jumping and team games.

Courtney Minto wins 2018 WA Trainee of the Year

Students, staff and parents contacting our IT Help desk at the College would no doubt have come across Courtney Minto’s smiling face or cheerful, friendly voice this year.

The College has been Courtney’s host employee as she completes a Traineeship in Information, Digital Media Technology with the Apprenticeship and Traineeship Company, and the amazing job she does at the school saw her recently awarded the 2018 WA Trainee of the Year from Apprentice Employment Network (AEN) WA.

The AENWA Awards of Excellence were held last Friday in Perth, recognizing the achievements of apprentices and trainees, employed by Group Training organisations in WA, and the host employees who support them.

Scitech Weather Wall

Starting this week, a group of students in Year 5 will be supplying data for the Scitech Weather Wall during term 4, which is broadcast each Friday as part of the weather report for GWN7 News.

The students will use equipment supplied by Scitech to measure the local minimum and maximum temperature, rainfall, wind direction and cloud types.

Equestrian National Schools Championships

Recently St Mary MacKillop College student Charlee Morton-Sharp competed at the Interschool Equestrian Nationals in Victoria, returning with a third place in two individual and one team event.
After winning Champion Primary School Rider at the WA State Equestrian Championships in April, Charlee and her home bred pony “Secret Valley Rockstar” were selected for the WA team, to compete in Victoria at the National Interschool Championships.

A record 137 Christmas shoeboxes

Christmas is going to be just a little bit brighter for many children this year, with a record number of 119 shoeboxes compiled by our primary students, staff and parents from the College, along with a further 18 boxes from parishioners, all destined for underprivileged homes around the world.

Primary Assembly 3JP

Room 8 structured their assembly around persuading us that St Mary MacKillop College needs an annual Talent Quest. MCs Eli and Ari hosted the show, as students performed their various talents before the four student judges dressed up as Mrs Paini, Mrs Clews, Mr Nankivell and Mr Norton.

SW Champions in Slam Series

On Friday 14 September, a group of Year 6 students travelled to Eaton Recreation Centre to compete for the first time in the Slam Series Basketball competition, hosted by School Sport WA. Our teams played hard, displaying great skills and sportsmanship all day, and were a credit to the school.

ACC Athletics Carnival

The St Mary MacKillop College Athletics squad travelled to Perth to compete in the ACC ‘D’ Division Athletics Carnival held at the State Athletics Centre, Challenge Stadium on Friday 11 September.

The boys had some excellent results throughout the day, spreading the workload with some stellar performances in the Junior Boys and consistency in the Senior Boys to combine for a second place overall.

Kindy Koomal Dreaming with the Wadandi

Students in Mrs Harding’s Kindy class enjoyed an amazing, hands-on cultural experience recently on a visit to the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse.

The children took a walk around the lighthouse with indigenous custodian, Josh Whiteland, who helped them to interpret the landscape through the eyes of the Wadandi people.
