Science, citizenship and snow: Year 9 students in Canberra

The 2018 Canberra trip was a week of fun, happy and exciting memories for the thirty students, Mr P Culnane, Ms Woodhall-Jones and Mr A Culnane, who travelled to the National Capital from the 11 to 18 August.

Students watched the satellite dish move at the Canberra Deep Space Communication complex in Tidbinbilla, before visiting the National Capital Exhibition Centre and then walking up Mount Ainslie and fighting howling winds on top of the Telstra Tower at Black Mountain for some rewarding views of Canberra.

AFL coaching clinic for Year 7 students

South West Football Development Officers Glenn Omodei and Nathan Douch treated Year 7 students to an AFL coaching clinic this week, enjoying favourable weather conditions that enabled them to get out onto the oval and have a go.

Students participated in a wide range of AFL related skills stations, rotating between them to build their knowledge and experience of the various components of the game: including kicking, handballing and goals, as well as evasion and tackling skills.

Senior Boys and Girls AFL: cross-town match-up

Senior students headed to GMAS recently to play a couple of energetic and entertaining cross-town AFL matches in what looks to become a regular competition between the two schools for both girls and boys.

It was a very physical match for the girls, with Kate Dickson, Kian Fancote, Natasha Warchol and Beige Harris just managing to keep the ‘MacKillop Marys’ in the game.

Year 6 student wins Angelico Art Award

Year 6 student Ruby Tonnet was presented with the First Prize in the 2D artwork category for Year 3-6 students at the opening night of this year’s Angelico Art Exhibition in Forrest Place last Tuesday. She received the award for a landscape she created using pastel on black paper.

The Timor Team return with memories to last a lifetime

The Timor Team for 2018 spent several days visiting the remote community of Baguia in Timor Leste during the July school holidays, and returned with memories and experiences that will last a lifetime.

The welcome the students received in the small villages made an emotional impact.

Curiosity Academy re-imagines an inclusive history

Students from Mr Fabre’s Year 6 class participating in the College’s Gifted and Talented program travelled to Perth last Friday to present at the HASS Week WA Primary Conference Day at the State Library.

The students presented to an audience of teachers and students in an afternoon session titled ‘Student Voice of HASS’, which gave students an opportunity to express themselves by outlining a past, present or future issue within a local, national or global level.

AFL: Year 10 ACC School Boys/Girls Cup

On Wednesday 1 August, the MacKillop Year 10 Girls and Boys Football teams played in the ACC School Girls Cup in challenging weather at Hay Park in Bunbury.

The wet weather played havoc along with blistering winds but did not dampen spirits, as all players were keen to try and make it through to the next round.

Year 9 students build bridges at Scitech

On Thursday 2 August, two teams of three students selected from Year 9 Extension Science travelled to Scitech in Perth to compete in Aurecon’s annual Bridge-Building competition.

Schools from regional and metropolitan areas gather each year to battle it out in the name of prize money and bragging rights.

SWPSA Cross Country in Bunbury

On Thursday 26 July, forty-eight of our Year 3-6 students travelled to Bunbury Cathedral Grammar School to compete in the South West Primary Schools Association (SWPSA) Cross Country Carnival. It was tough competition against twelve other schools from Collie to Albany and across the South West region.

Crafty Year 7s knit squares for service

Year 7 students from St Mary MacKillop College have been finding their way around the world of knitting this term as they attempt to address a shortage of warm blankets this winter for St Vincent de Paul.

With brightly coloured yarn and needles poised, plus plenty of assistance from a group of passionate knitters in our College and Parish community, students took on the challenge of learning how to knit blanket squares to help those in need.
