The College was proud to present 2017 MacKillop graduate Darcy Hogan with a Bronze Award in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award scheme recently. Darcy completed her program while at the College in Year 12, and was the first of our students to earn this award.
Year 10 student Shona Kiely is taking her scientific research project on dieback treatment to Beijing next year to compete in an international science fair, thanks to Scitech and Rio Tinto.
Shona and fellow Year 10 student Flynn Hembroff showcased their individual projects recently in front of a judging panel from Scitech, Rio Tinto and the SW Science Council, after working with a mentor since April to plan, conduct and present their original research.
Year 11 student Courtland Wood has been selected as one of four under 17 boys to represent WA in the Junior National Road Race Championships, after taking key podium positions in his last two cycling races.
Early in August, Courtland was the first to cross the line in the under 17 category of the Chidlow III race as part of the Elements Road Series, negotiating some challenging hill climbs to beat the best in the state.
Year 7 and 8 students from St Mary MacKillop College earned a place on the podium in the S1 category at this year’s Busselton Pedal Prix.
This annual event is a six-hour race using human-powered vehicles, where teams pedal as fast as they can over an 850 metre circuit with straights, chicanes and some serious hairpin corners.
Two of our staff members performed exceptionally well recently in the Masters Swimming Australia Postal Swim run by the Busselton Swimming Club.
Science Technician, Rhonda Pearsall, posted the fastest times in her age category, while Maths teacher and College Swim coach, Peter Pavlinovich, took home a medal and title of Fastest Male overall, after posting competitive times in the 400m Freestyle, Backstroke and Butterfly.
On Tuesday 28 August, students from Year 10 and Year 11 participated in the PARTY (Preventing Alcohol and Risk-related Trauma in Youth) Program at the Busselton Health Campus. The day included a tour of the Emergency Department and ICU (Intensive Care Unit), giving students a hands-on, behind the scenes look at what happens when a patient presents with critical injuries as a result of major trauma.
After a massive effort at the ACC Hockey Carnival in Bunbury two months ago, the College’s Senior Girls Hockey Team faced some formidable opponents when they advanced to the semi-finals of the Buchanan Cup at Perth Hockey Stadium.
The girls were excited and nervous as they head up to a wet and cold day in Perth to play five games against quality opposition.
The Room 13 assembly was all about Health. Mrs Moon’s class informed the audience that we need a balance of physical, mental and dietary health to have optimal health in our lives. The Year 4s shared what they have been learning while designing and creating a Health Promotion Park for Technology, Health and HASS to counteract the limited facilities available for kids in Busselton that promote all three types of Health.
Last Friday the Primary Choir attended the One Big Voice Festival in Perth. Formerly called the Westcoast Songfest, this event has been going since 2001 and brings together choirs from more than 40 Primary schools across WA, joining over 2000 voices in song at the Perth Arena.
Last week the Curiosity Academy’s STEM students enjoyed a visit from Busselton SES Emergency Management Officer, Wayne Credaro, who shared his knowledge and experience on dealing with natural disasters in the local community. Search and Rescue Dog ‘Rocco’ with his handler Claire also came along to demonstrate their amazing skills at finding missing or lost people.
