Christmas is going to be just a little bit brighter for many children this year, with a record number of 119 shoeboxes compiled by our primary students, staff and parents from the College, along with a further 18 boxes from parishioners, all destined for underprivileged homes around the world.
Room 8 structured their assembly around persuading us that St Mary MacKillop College needs an annual Talent Quest. MCs Eli and Ari hosted the show, as students performed their various talents before the four student judges dressed up as Mrs Paini, Mrs Clews, Mr Nankivell and Mr Norton.
On Friday 14 September, a group of Year 6 students travelled to Eaton Recreation Centre to compete for the first time in the Slam Series Basketball competition, hosted by School Sport WA. Our teams played hard, displaying great skills and sportsmanship all day, and were a credit to the school.
The St Mary MacKillop College Athletics squad travelled to Perth to compete in the ACC ‘D’ Division Athletics Carnival held at the State Athletics Centre, Challenge Stadium on Friday 11 September.
The boys had some excellent results throughout the day, spreading the workload with some stellar performances in the Junior Boys and consistency in the Senior Boys to combine for a second place overall.
Students in Mrs Harding’s Kindy class enjoyed an amazing, hands-on cultural experience recently on a visit to the Cape Naturaliste Lighthouse.
The children took a walk around the lighthouse with indigenous custodian, Josh Whiteland, who helped them to interpret the landscape through the eyes of the Wadandi people.
Year 12 student Riley Culnane was named captain for the second year in a row in the ACC Girls All Stars Netball Team for 2018.
Year 11 student Brooke Gibson also joined the team of ten players, who represented Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA on Sunday in an exhibition match against the combined government schools team (SSWA), as curtain raiser to the WA Netball League Grand Finals.
Ross Rann was presented with his ACC Letterman award recently after being selected in the Associated and Catholic Colleges of WA All Star Swim Team for the last four years. This is the highest individual accolade awarded by the ACC.
Ross received a framed “ACC Letter” as a memento of this outstanding achievement across his Secondary school years: a stylized chenille embroidered patch in a collegiate letterman jacket style.
Next year’s Senior Student Council were announced at a Secondary assembly last Wednesday. Student Council Co-ordinator, Alison Woodhall-Jones, remarked that the calibre of applicants was very high. “I was impressed with these students from the outset,” she said, referring to the Year 11 Leadership Day with Mark Clayden last term, which began the selection process.
A number of our teaching and support staff have been learning some enjoyable new skills, with a little help from the College’s Design and Technology department.
D&T teachers John Ferguson and Quentin Harmer offered after school classes in woodworking to staff – each building an Adirondack chair as their hands-on project.
Mr Thomson’s Year 3 class have been exploring the magic of Shakespeare, and they shared this enjoyment of his various plays in their assembly recently.
From a cackling “Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble” to the island of ‘The Tempest’, the students showed their enthusiasm for the rhyme, comedy and dark drama of Shakespeare’s pen.
